Mrs. Alemitu Omod the first female regional state Governor in Ethiopia

August 18, 2024 (GSN) -The Gambella Regional Council has appointed the first female, Mrs. Alemitu Omod as the Head of State.

The appointment is a historic leadership milestone in Ethiopia. In a significant step forward for Ethiopia, Alemitu Omod has been appointed Chief Administrator of Gambella People’s State, marking her as the first female state chief in the nation’s history.

The appointment was made during the 2nd emergency assembly of the 6th election period, the 3rd term of office of the State Council, replacing the former head of the state, Omod Ojulu, who is transitioning to a new role within the ruling Prosperity Party.

The State Council emphasized that Alemitu’s appointment aligns with the public’s demand for peace, development, and effective governance. Her leadership is expected to bring peace, security, and the development of transformative change necessary for the state.

Alemitu Omod previously served as the deputy speaker of the state and the women's and social affairs state minister, among other high-ranking positions. In another key appointment, Gatlak Ron (PhD) was named Deputy Chief Administrator of Gambella People’s State.

It was also stated by the council that she is a strong leader who has worked as a public servants in their previous positions and provided competent leadership.

 Mrs. Alemitu Omod has officially taken over from Mr. Omod Ojulu, who has been leading the region for more than six years.

The council unanimously approved the appointment of the head of state and he was sworn in before the council.
