No Oscars plaque, but Ethiopian-born Ruth Negga glowed in red

Hollywood, Ca, February 28, 2017 (GSN)Ethiopia-born actress, Ruth Negga, missed out on the Oscar award for the ‘Actress in a Leading Role,’ category at the just ended 89th Academy Awards that took place in Hollywood over the weekend.

Ruth’s performances in the movie, ‘Loving,’ earned her a nomination for the category. She was pitched against four other actresses for the award.

The eventual winner was Emma Stone for her role in the musical romance, ‘La La Land.’ It was Emma’s first Oscar after she played a struggling actress who fell in love with a jazz musician in the musical romance.

Others aside Ruth who lost to Stone were Isabelle Huppert (for her role in the fim ‘Elle’), Natalie Portman in ‘Jackie,’ and Meryl Streep in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins.’

Ruth Negga is Ethiopian by paternal lines even though her father is reported to have died when she was a young girl. She was raised by her Irish mother. Other films she has starred in are Capital Letters (2004), Isolation and Breakfast on Pluto (2005), Warcraft (2016).

The film ‘Loving,’ borders on the true life story of a Virginia couple who had to live through the days of laws that outlawed inter-racial marriages. Her role in the widely-acclaimed movie has won her other nominations aside the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Other nominations include the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, and a BAFTA Rising Star Award.

 The film which was released in the United States last year was directed by Jeff Nichols who also wrote the screenplay. Ruth starred alongside Joel Edgerton as the main characters. Others in supporting roles included Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll and Michael Shannon. Source: (REUTERS)
